Orange Shirt Day/Perspective Walk

Students were asked to take a Perspective Walk and identify what is lovely/pleasing AND unlovely/unappealing. We talked about perspective and how something may be lovely to one person but unlovely to another. These differences make us special and unique.

Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow.

Students received their classroom and individual photos today. Check their backpacks for those beautiful faces.

I AM SO EXCITED! Through recent conversations connected to our community service project (creating uplifting cards for the elderly) it came to my attention that the students in Room 4 were unaware of the game Crib. I was quick to ask of they were interested in learning the game and.....they are all in!! Therefore, in the next few weeks we will be working as a large group to develop the skills linked to crib (and further strengthen our math skills!).

Reminders:

- No School this coming Friday.

-Field Study to Weaselhead - Tuesday, October 3rd (all day). I have enough volunteers for this day at this time. I will email the names (if you have forgotten) of the parent volunteers before the week is out. Please look for the field study permission form in your child's backpack this week. There is no fee to this field study.

Seed Survivor

Just a reminder that all Grade 4 classes will be working with Seed Survivor - Nutrien tomorrow afternoon.

During our EYE Opener this morning - students created words playing Boogle. This is an easy game to develop vocabulary at any skill level. Please ask your child about this task

We are also starting our read aloud, Fatty Legs, connecting to Orange Shirt Day and National Day Reconciliation.

This is a 4 day school week as Friday is a day off to honour Reconciliation.

Please check out the Seed Survivor website for additional information.

The students in Room 4 had an amazing presentation by Microscope Mark from MAD Scientist. We focused our attention on Light and Colours. The students were AWESOME listeners during the presentation.

-We learned that white is made up of all the colours being absorbed. - Seamus

-We learned ROYGBIV and that is contains most of the colours of the rainbow.- Dylan

-We learned that red, green, and blue are the primary colours of light. Red, yellow and blue are the primary colours of paint. - Keera

-We learned that when we mix a lot of colours together, it will become darker. - August

-We learned that BLACK absorbs all the colours. All the colours bounce off to give you WHITE. - Owen

Parts of a Plant

Room 4 has been working on developing their understanding of plant growth and change. Our scientific sketching was focused on the sunflower this week - which brought about many 'I wonder' statements. Students took the time, with a partner, to research in more depth about the sunflower (hopefully answering a few wonders along the way).

Here are a few things the students found through their research:

-the centre of the sunflower is actually thousands of small flowers

-the biggest sunflower was over 30 feet tall

-there are over 70 types of sunflowers

-a sunflower root can grow 1 meter in depth

-a sunflower has between 34 and 89 petals

-the largest sunflower can be found in Germany

-each sunflower can contain between 1000 to 2000 seeds

We look forward to sharing our plant knowledge to you all during conferences this week.

Remember that the doors open tomorrow for the farewell at 1:45 pm. The assembly will begin at 2:00pm.
